Everything Will Exist Alright in the End is the ninth studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on October 7, 2014.[1] It is Weezer'due south only anthology released by Republic Records,[2] and the tertiary and final Weezer album produced by Ric Ocasek, who previously produced Blue (1994) and Green (2001).

Everything Volition Be Alright in the End departs from the electronic pop production of Weezer'due south previous two albums, Raditude and Hurley, returning to a sound more reminiscent of the band's earlier albums. The lyrics bargain with singer Rivers Cuomo'southward relationship with his father figures, fans and women.

The anthology received positive reviews and became the most acclaimed Weezer album since Pinkerton (1996). It is the ring'due south fifth album to tiptop in the Billboard 200 top v, reaching No. 5 and selling 34,000 copies its offset week. The album was supported past three singles: "Back to the Shack", "Cleopatra", and "Da Vinci". Equally of early 2016, the album has sold 100,000 copies in the U.Due south.[3]

Background [edit]

In 2010, Weezer released two albums: Hurley, and a collection of unreleased cloth, Death to False Metal. Soon after their release, the band announced that work had begun on a ninth studio album, with the intent of a 2011 release.[four] Prepare to exist produced past Shawn Everett, who had worked on the ring's previous two releases, the album was shelved. At this time, ring frontman Rivers Cuomo stated: "We merely started working on our tenth tape. I was talking to the producer and he was maxim, "These songs sound totally unlike from Hurley. Hurley was kind of dark, and the new songs audio like yous're 16, riding your bicycle to get a Slurpee."[5] The band abandoned piece of work on the album, in order to requite primary songwriter Cuomo more time to write more material.[vi]

Cuomo wanted to create a "circuitous, classic anthology", but hit a artistic wall during the hiatus.[seven] In May 2013, following his yearly Vipassana meditation trip, Cuomo came upward with "a strong vision of the album".[7] He announced plans to begin recording a new album in January 2014, with work continuing through the summer.[8] Ric Ocasek was announced equally the album's producer; Ocasek produced the band's self-titled first and third albums, otherwise known as the Blue Album (1994) and the Light-green Album (2001).[8] On March 19, 2014, Weezer released a clip of 2 new songs on the band'south official YouTube business relationship that ended with the words "in the studio at present".[9] On June thirteen, the anthology championship was announced.[x]

Recording [edit]

The ring chose Ric Ocasek as the producer based on the feeling that he would best be able to return to "the sound and the vibe and the free energy of where [the band] came from", while also allowing them to "explore and try new things".[11] The band recorded the majority of the album in The Hamlet, a recording studio located in Los Angeles, California.[eleven] Bassist Scott Shriner described Ocasek's production fashion every bit "very serious".

Writing and composition [edit]

Over 200 songs were considered for the album, with 20 being tracked and "a dozen or so" being chosen for the album.[12] According to the album'due south official printing release, the anthology is organized thematically around three groups of songs:[13] "Belladonna", "The Panopticon Artist" and "Patriarchia".[vii] Band leader Rivers Cuomo described the anthology'southward theme every bit "an increased awareness of the impermanence of everything nosotros [take] for granted [and] "how to make peace with that."[14] Drummer Patrick Wilson described the album's sound equally "bombastic, loose, kind of booming. [The] record sounds like it'due south going to have the tight structure of the Blue Album with a little fleck more abandon like Pinkerton".[11] The ring stated the album would feature less "modern pop product" than its previous two albums, Raditude and Hurley.[15] The album equally a whole has been described as culling stone, power popular and pop punk.[sixteen] [17] [18]

Rivers Cuomo (pictured) is credited with co-writing the entire anthology.

"Belladonna" includes the songs "Ain't Got Nobody", "Lonely Girl", "Da Vinci", "Go Away", "Cleopatra" and "Return to Ithaka", all of which deal with Cuomo'south relationships with women.[12] "Lonely Girl", written past Cuomo and Joshua Berman Alexander, features a power pop sound and "alloy of heavy guitars mixed with a soft-singing Rivers Cuomo" and has been compared Weezer's earlier way on The Green Album.[nineteen] "Da Vinci", also co-written by Cuomo and Alexander, serves as the anthology'due south third single. Scott Heisel of Culling Press compared the song, sonically, to "Pork and Beans", off The Red Album.[xx] He too described the song as "a dear vocal of the purest lodge, directed toward a beautiful adult female [...] or perhaps a soothing lullaby to a crying infant."[20] The song also features a prominent whistling hook, which producer Ric Ocasek heavily criticized.[11] The preceding unmarried, "Cleopatra", was written solely by Cuomo. The song features the use of harmonica, acoustic guitar and a heavier sounding middle eight,[21] which Chris Coplan at Consequence of Sound characterized every bit sounding like Weezer (1994).[22] Cuomo took inspiration for the vocal from the Shakespeare tragedy, Antony and Cleopatra.[23]

Tracks under "The Panopticon Artist" include "Back to the Shack", "I've Had It Up To Here" and "The Waste Land" all deal with Cuomo'south relationships to others, particularly his fans.[7] [12] The album's starting time single, "Dorsum to the Shack", lyrically deals with the wish to return "to [the band'south] 1994 roots", with Rolling Stone describing it as a "nerdy, cocky-referential [...] guitar-heavy track".[24] [25] HitFix reviewer Dave Lewis found that the song serves as a thematic continuation of two previous Weezer songs: "In The Garage" from The Blue Anthology and "Memories" from Hurley.[26] "I've Had Information technology Up To Here" features Cuomo bringing "finest mock-operatic metal vocalism" and a "dexterous syncopation [...] providing a mid-point palate cleanser", and lyrically deals with his frustrations with "unappreciative masses".[20] [27] [28] The span to the song was besides noted for its "Queen-ly choral flourishes and skyscraping loftier notes."[28]

The final group of songs, "Patriarchia", are "Eulogy for a Stone Band", "The British Are Coming", "Foolish Begetter" and "Anonymous", which bargain with relationships with father figures, "with a new spin".[12] "Eulogy for a Rock Ring", deals with the band's relation to "the great rock bands that came earlier [them] every bit they are retiring [...] We're kind of in that spot at present."[12] "The British Are Coming", written solely by Cuomo, features lyrical references to American Revolutionary War, acoustic guitars and an "one-time school Weezer" guitar solo.."[29] The verses went through several lyrical changes, with Cuomo debating whether adding a personal angle to the song or purely writing from the point of view of the founding fathers.[xv] "Foolish Father" features "plea for paternal forgiveness that crests with a small choir singing" the album'southward title.[28] The vocal was initially inspired past the Shakespeare tragedy, King Lear.[23]

Entertainment Weekly reported that the album would feature an "ambitious three-role suite", which includes the song "My Mystery", which was later re-titled "Bearding".[12] The suite was subsequently revealed to exist titled "The Futurescope Trilogy", also featuring "The Waste Land" and "Return to Ithaka",[30] which serves to "close out the anthology with a cacophony of guitars, percussion, and harmonies" that includes v concurrent guitar solos in "Render to Ithaka".[31] Pitchfork writer Ian Cohen compared the ambitious trilogy to both the ring's unfinished rock opera, Songs from the Black Hole and the ring's 2008 unmarried, "The Greatest Human That Ever Lived".[32]

Promotion [edit]

Since March 19, 2014, the band began releasing a weekly video series, with twenty-four installments beingness included so far. Several clips featured the band working in the studio and also revealed several song titles for the then-unnamed anthology, including "Ain't Got Nobody" and "The Waste Land".[ten] The ninth installment of the series eventually revealed the title to the album,[x] while the eleventh revealed the album cover[33] past visual artist Christopher McMahon.[34] The original release engagement of September 30 was appear through both the spider web series and Entertainment Weekly, along with a behind-the-scenes expect into the recording sessions.[11] [12]

In February 2014, the band performed the first single from the album, titled "Dorsum to the Shack", on the 2014 Weezer Prowl.[ten] The studio version of the song premiered on July 21 on the band's YouTube channel, and was released as a single the following day.[35] [36] On July 23, the ring performed the alive TV debut of the vocal on The This evening Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[37]

On July 21, the ring announced the album would be available for pre-club on PledgeMusic.[38] The band also appear plans to perform the entire album, "front end to dorsum", in certain small venues.[39] On September 8, the band debuted a second unmarried from the album, "Cleopatra",[40] while also releasing upcoming album art, forth with more pre-social club information.[41] The full anthology was made bachelor on iTunes Radio on September 30, 2014, as function of the Start Play serial.[42] On November 18, a third single from the anthology was released, "Da Vinci".[43] "Go Away", was released as a promotional single on July 24, 2015, along with a music video.[44]

In tardily 2014, the band promoted the album by playing it live in its entirety, mainly in smaller venues that also included acoustic performances of songs from their back catalogue.[45]
